International Organization for Standardization
ISO The global body for international voluntary standardization. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ISO was founded in 1947. The short name ISO is the same for all languages, and is based on the Greek word isos, meaning equal. On its Web site, ISO states that it acts "as a bridging organization in which a consensus can be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society, such as the needs of stakeholder groups like consumers and users." Its activities focus on the issuing of international standards (ISO Standards) that encourage global conformity and the consistent treatment of matters ranging from technological aspects of manufacturing processes to information technology developments. ISO has issued in excess of 14,000 international standards. Two of the most well-known "families" of ISO standards are ISO 9000 and ISO 14000, which refer to *quality management and environmental management systems respectively. Web site: www.iso.org
